The project
Quai 9 in Geneva has added a new, modern extension to accommodate more beneficiaries and offer new services tailored to current needs. Designed as a functional and welcoming space, the project includes an extension of nearly 200 m2 that blends harmoniously with the existing building. Built as a temporary structure for a period of five years, this project meets specific needs for adaptation and growth.
The construction method
The two floors, constructed from wood, rest on linear foundations that also form a «cold» technical void. The floor between the stories and the flat roof, whose exposed joists highlight the materiality of the wood, are supported by a central post-and-beam structure and exterior walls with a wood frame. The entire structure is clad with a ventilated facade made of maritime pine panels.
The challenge
Located in a busy area, close to railways and tram lines, the building was designed to fit into the urban environment. Its lightweight, modular structure was designed to be assembled entirely by hand, without the use of a crane.
