«Lysbüchel» site development, Basel

The «Lysbüchel» site development in Basel is a comprehensive construction project that aims to transform a former industrial site into a modern residential and commercial area. An elementary school with two kindergartens and daycare facilities as well as the ELYS cultural and commercial building (nominated for the PrixSIA 2024, among others) have already been built on the extensive site . Further plans include cooperative apartments, affordable apartments (1000+ housing program), new workplaces, public green spaces and an attractive neighbourhood square.

LysP8 - New residential building with commercial space

LysP8 is an architectural combination of a point building on the Volta Nord square, a long building along Lothringerstrasse and a connecting access structure. This combination creates individual facades and makes effective use of the space. The access scaffolding serves as a striking entrance and connects the various floors and living areas.

Timber construction and re-use

As a timber construction project, LysP8 meets high sustainability standards. A large number of well-preserved, used components are reused, including elements for the solid wood ceiling that once spanned the Formula E race track in Zurich, for example, as well as fermacell® gypsum fiber boards for the walls and corrugated sheets for the roof. Cork strips were applied to the wooden floor beams, which on the one hand functionally decouple and improve the impact and room sound, and on the other hand visually create a shadow gap on the ceiling (see pictures below). All reused materials make a valuable contribution to resource-saving construction.

Sophisticated timber construction engineering details

The erection of the timber construction building programs by Stamm Bau AG, Holzbau, Arlesheim is progressing rapidly. Our teams in the specialist area of work planning were challenged in advance with the comprehensive clarifications and preparatory work with regard to the collection and processing of the necessary information and documents.

In cooperation and collaboration with the engineering office PIRMIN JUNG Schweiz AG, a specially designed shear composite based on steel was developed for use on a project-specific basis. The elements of the wall panels are brought together and connected in a coherent manner. High-tech timber construction at its best. The details are shown below in Cadwork:

Generally speaking, wood is an impressive building material with an excellent environmental balance. In addition, the material brings a high comfort factor to every project. Once construction is complete, future residents can look forward to a lively communal area and a spacious garden that can be used for various activities in the summer.

The south-facing side has pergolas that provide thermal insulation in summer, and additional awnings offer further protection if required.

This project impressively demonstrates that top performance is always the result of a combination of know-how and expertise. We would like to thank all the teams involved in the construction, in particular
