ArchitekTOUR in the wood cellar - a complete success



Basements made of wood are more environmentally friendly, can be built faster and offer a more pleasant atmosphere. The first wooden basement in Switzerland was inaugurated and certified as part of an ArchitektTOUR: the wood used comes from Switzerland and stores a total of 222 tons of CO₂.

As part of the HOLZarchitekTOUR event together with the Initiative Holz BE, the first basement made of wood in Switzerland was inaugurated. In the multipurpose room of this basement, more than 45 people gathered for the inauguration and listened to the exciting presentations of the building owner, the planners and the research partners. 

Exciting speeches 

Prof. Thomas Rohner and Dr. Sonja Geier showed how construction planning could develop in the future and what the planning of a jumbo jet and that of the apartment building at Blümlimattweg 15 have in common. Prof. Christoph Renfer and Christian Dörig explained the peculiarities of basements made of wood and how these could soon be mass-produced.

First cellar made of wood 

What seemed impossible for a long time is now a reality: Thun is home to the first apartment building with a basement made entirely of wood. Houses without heating or air conditioning make an important contribution to climate protection. An even greater potential for energy savings lies in the choice of building materials. 

Wood is already widely used in building construction. The next step is to dispense with climate-damaging building materials such as steel and concrete - including in basements and floor slabs. In order for basements to be mass-produced from wood in the future, a number of research questions need to be clarified. A research project of the Bern University of Applied Sciences together with Timbatec, TS3 and other business partners is currently addressing these questions. A start-up is to be founded from the group of research partners, which will be operationally active from 2023. 

DeepWood research project

The DeepWood project refers to the future further development of the BIM maturity level from Level 2 to Level 3 and faces the challenge of how the collaboration of several users can be organized simultaneously in a common model. The BMW15 apartment building is the Living Lab for this research project with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the Bern University of Applied Sciences.

A lot of wood is visible on the outside and inside. The TS3 technology allows for a column-and-panel construction method. The TS3 joints remain visible in this project.

The 25-meter-long and eight-meter-wide wooden structure stands on the basement made of cross-laminated timber panels and is being supported by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts HSLU CCTP and the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH AHB Biel as part of two Innosuisse research projects.
